One Day Trip to Serbia 2025

I had this amazing opportunity to be without a child for a whole day!

My mother came to visit us in Yasen, combining a few days off with the birthday of our boy. She arrived on Friday late afternoon and we took her out for some delicious burgers. At the same time, Roni wrote to me asking if we wanted to go on a one-day trip to Serbia on some eco trail for a walk. I looked at my mother and she said, “GO.” I got super excited since we hadn’t had a day off for such a long time, and leaving our boy with her (I trust her completely, so I don’t stress about it) was such a relief.

Saturday morning I woke up in a great mood, ready to enjoy some child-free time. Veni and I went to Vidin and bought snacks and water for the trip while waiting for Roni and her boyfriend, Ivan. Soon we were off to Serbia. I felt so good and could not wait to walk in nature. Ivan was driving alongside the Danube River and it was breathtaking – so peaceful, so beautiful: the water, the boats, the ships.

We reached Djerdap National Park. I have to admit, it looked just like the mountain next to my hometown – Vitosha. I was surprised that there was an entry fee; it was very cheap, but still unexpected. Honestly, I thought we were going to some kind of park, but no – it was a mountain. Not that high, but it did have its steep places. I loved it! Veni and I walked ahead of Roni and Ivan, enjoying the calm, silent moments of the day. I was so happy not to hear the word “Mom” every two seconds. I have to say this because I know there are mothers who would eat me alive for that comment, but I’m a human being. I need time for myself. And yes, I love when my boy calls me “Mom,” but everything has its limits.

Walking in nature was wonderful. Veni was disappointed because he couldn’t find any fruits to eat. It took us about an hour and a half, walking at an easy pace, to get to a viewpoint with an amazing panorama of the Danube River and Romania. We took many pictures, enjoyed the view and the sunshine. Then we headed back to the car – the way down took half the time – and since it was already mid-afternoon, we were starving and ready for some delicious Serbian food. We went to Negotin to a famous restaurant where the food is outstanding. We can never get used to the huge portions they serve, so we had to take half of the food home.

After the spectacular late lunch, we visited a monastery to buy some homemade rakia. Serbia has amazing rakia – it’s a fruit-based alcoholic beverage.

Before going back to Vidin to take our car, we stopped in a village where Roni’s grandparents have a huge garden full of delicious fruits and vegetables. They gave us buckets of food and I couldn’t be more grateful. I completely fell in love with the peaches.

It was a great day, and I hope soon we’ll have another opportunity to escape and enjoy some child-free time with friends.
